Richard Mayer’s Twelfth Principle

elearningdesigners.org's Dana Chung presents Richard Mayer's 12th Multimedia Principle, the Image Principle that states: "People do not learn better from multimedia presentations when a static image of the instructor is added to the screen."

Richard Mayer’s Twelfth Principle – The Image Principle

Hope everyone is enjoying a bright week so far! This week we are focusing on Richard Mayer’s 12th Multimedia principle! Like all of Mayer’s instructional design principles, this one is based on solid, educational research and is situated within “boundary conditions” or a set of conditions when the principle is most likely to apply. For this principle, Mayer researched whether or not having a static image of an instructor onscreen would improve learning outcomes.

What do you think? Do you enjoy seeing an image of your instructor on presentations? Does it depend on whether or not you’ve met or seen your instructor before? Let us know in the comments!

elearningdesigners.org presents Richard Mayer’s Eleventh Principle, the Voice Principle! The Voice Principle states that “People learn better when the narration in multimedia lessons is spoken in a friendly human voice rather than a machine voice.” Example: Adding professional authentic voice talent for learners to listen to while being immersed in their learning experiences.
