Richard Mayer’s Fourteenth Principle

The Immersion Principle

Learn about Richard Mayer’s fourteenth multimedia principle, the Immersion Principle, in this poster created by Dana Chung! The Immersion Principle says: “People do not necessarily learn better in 3D immersive virtual reality than with a corresponding 2D desktop presentation”.

Example: While an engaging activity, use of virtual reality in a forest may distract the user more than help them learn about trees.

Mayer found VR simulation led to less learning in a 2019 study; however, in a more recent April 2022 study, Mayer found students performed significantly higher in retention posttests.
